A village in Aki County in north-central Mie Prefecture. Population 4,478 (1995). Mount Kasatori (845m) of the Nunobiki Mountains rises to the west, Mount Kyogamine (820m) to the north, and the Nagano River, a tributary of the Kumozu River, flows southeast through the center. In the past, Ionomikuriya, Naganoomikuriya, and other Ise Grand Shrine kitchens were located here. In the Middle Ages, the Nagano clan, who built their castles in the Nunobiki Mountains, established their influence in the area and also became servants of the Muromachi Shogunate. Nagano Pass, located in the saddle between Mount Kasatori and Mount Kyogamine, was a strategic point connecting Ise with Iga and Yamato, and in the early modern period, the Iga Highway, which connected Tsu in Ise with Ueno in Iga, was the main road in the Tsu domain.
