Fujiwara no Ietaka - Fujiwara no Ietaka

Japanese:
Fujiwara no Ietaka - Fujiwara no Ietaka

A poet of the early Kamakura period. He was the son of Gon Chunagon Mitsutaka, who was also known as Nekoma Chunagon. His mother was the daughter of Grand Empress Dowager Miyanosuke Fujiwara Sanekane. He served as chamberlain, Kazusa no Suke, and Kunaikyo, and reached the rank of Junior Second Rank, and was known as Mibu Nihon and Bojo Nihon. He learned poetry from Fujiwara Shunzei, and was a lifelong friend of Shunzei's son Teika, and was also a worthy rival who was considered to be his equal. His style of poetry is generally simpler than Teika's. He was highly trusted by Emperor Gotoba, and when the Wakadokoro (poetry office) was established in 1201 (Kennin 1), he was appointed as a yoryuudo (member of the Imperial Court) along with Teika and others, and was also included as one of the five editors of the Shin Kokin Wakashu (New Ancient and Modern Poetry Collection). In the Imperial Palace of Emperor Juntoku, he worked with Teika to guide waka poetry at the Imperial Court. He also had a close relationship with Emperor Tsuchimikado, perhaps because of his relationship with his daughter, Shomeimon'in (Tsuchimikado'in), who was a junior minister. Because of this relationship, he was greatly shocked when the three Emperors Gotoba, Tsuchimikado, and Juntoku were sent far away during the Jokyu War in 1221 (Jokyu 3). However, even after the war, he used this sadness as a driving force to continue his active poetry activities, and he never lost contact with Emperor Gotoba in Oki (Shimane Prefecture). However, he was not fortunate in his official career, and only reached the rank of Junior Second Rank in his later years. In 1236 (Kasei 2), he became a monk due to illness, adopted the Buddhist name of Butsyo, and died the following year on April 9th at Tennoji Temple in Naniwa (Osaka) while practicing Nissokan meditation. He was 80 years old. His works include the family anthology "Minishu" (Gyokuginshu), his self-poetry contest "Ietakakyo Hyakuban Jikaawase," and others, and have been included in successive imperial anthologies starting with "Senzai Wakashu," but there is no comprehensive treatise on waka poetry. His sons, Chamberlain Takasuke and Shozaisho (Minister of State) Jomyomon'in, were also known as poets.
