Bujumbura - Bujumbura (English spelling)

The largest city in Burundi, central Africa. Located on the northeastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. Population 321,000 (1999 estimate). It was the capital until December 2018, when it was moved to Gitega (some institutions remain in Bujumbura). It is home to industries such as coffee and cotton processing, beer, cement, soap, and shoes. It is connected to Kigoma in Tanzania by lake transport, and is economically connected to Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean coast through Kigoma. It also has strong economic ties with the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), and a considerable number of its residents are Zairians. It was built in the 1880s as a German military garrison, and was formerly called Usumbra. It is a modern city with plenty of greenery, and is also known as a lakeside tourist destination. It is home to the University of Bujumbura and an international airport.
