An old town in the northern part of the Tsugaru Plain, Kitatsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture. The Tsugaru Railway runs through the town. Agriculture, mainly rice farming, is the main industry. Lumber is also produced here. This is the birthplace of Dazai Osamu, and his childhood home remains. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Kitatsugaru District, Ichiura Village, and Goshogawara City. Area: 125.97 km2 . Population: 11,797 (2003).
