Formerly known as (1950-64): Kolarovgrad. A city in Varna Oblast, northeastern Bulgaria. Located east of the Shumen Plateau on the northern side of the Balkan Mountains, it is the junction of the Sofia-Varna railway line, as well as other railways and roads. There are factories producing electrical equipment, agricultural machinery, auto parts, food, leather, tobacco, lumber, furniture, confectionery, and printing, and the beer produced here is particularly delicious. Grape cultivation is also thriving. Founded as a fortified town in the Middle Ages, it was known as Missionis in the 11th and 12th centuries, and as Shuma after 1430.
