Born: 1893/1894?. Smilovichi, near Minsk, Russian Empire
[Died] August 9, 1943. Paris, France. A Russian-born French painter. The 10th of 11 children of poor Jewish parents, he moved to Paris in 1913 and studied under Cormon, soon coming to know sculptor Jacques Lipchitz, painters Marc Chagall and Amedeo Modigliani. His portraits and still lifes in intense colors, primarily red, were recognized early on by art dealer Leopold Zubrowski and others, but he rarely exhibited any work, and died at the age of 50, suffering from loneliness, poverty, anxiety and impatience, and falling ill. His major works include "The Skinned Cow" (c. 1925, Albright-Knox Art Gallery).

ロシア生まれのフランスの画家。貧しいユダヤ人の 11人兄弟の 10番目に生まれ，1913年パリに移住しコルモンに師事，まもなく彫刻家ジャック・リプシツ，画家マルク・シャガール，アメデオ・モジリアニを知る。赤を主調とする強烈な色彩の人物画や静物画は，早くから画商レオポルド・ズブロウスキーらの認めるところであったが，ほとんど作品を発表せず，孤独と貧困，不安と焦燥のうちに病にかかり 50年の生涯を終えた。主要作品『皮を剥がれた牛』（1925頃，オールブライト＝ノックス・アート・ギャラリー）など。
