Elisabeth Schwarzkopf

Japanese: シュワルツコップ - しゅわるつこっぷ(英語表記)Elisabeth Schwarzkopf
Elisabeth Schwarzkopf

German soprano. Born in Prussia (now Jarotszyn, Poland) in the German Empire. After marrying Walter Legge, she acquired British citizenship. She studied in Berlin and made her debut there in 1938. In 1942, she was recognized by conductor Böhm, and the following year she appeared in many Mozart operas at the Vienna State Opera, initially known as a coloratura soprano. After World War II, she was active at major opera houses and music festivals around the world, and in 1951 she participated in the premiere of Stravinsky's "Der Räumeländer" in Venice. She also excelled as an interpreter of German songs, establishing interpretations that deeply imbued the emotions of the lyrics in works from Schubert to Wolf. Her art has become widely known in Japan through her frequent visits to Japan since 1968 (Showa 43) and the film of R. Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" conducted by Karajan. In 1976, she retired from concert activities. She co-wrote a memoir with her husband, record producer Walter Legge, titled On & Off the Record (1982).
