A former town in Higashiiwai County in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture. Most of the area is mountainous and hilly, with the Kitakami River running along the western border. The town produces rice and tobacco leaves, and also engages in dairy farming. Incorporated into Ichinoseki City in September 2011. Area: 123.15 km2 . Population: 9,065 (2010).
