A city in central-west Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1943. Sorachi Comprehensive Subprefectural Bureau is located here. Located on the eastern edge of the Ishikari Plain, it was once a farming and mining center with the Ishikari Coalfield coalfields to the east, but in 1974 the last coal mine in the city, Asahi Coal Mine, closed. The city is served by the Hakodate Main Line and Muroran Main Line. In 1983, the Do-o Expressway was opened, and the city attracted businesses to the industrial park, and the recreational facility Iwamizawa Park was completed. The gentle slopes and natural levees were cultivated early on, and the city produces a lot of rice, wheat, beans, and onions, and food processing and brewing are also carried out. In March 2006, Kurisawa Town and Kita Village in Sorachi County were incorporated. 481.02 km2 .
