A city in central-west Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1943. Sorachi Comprehensive Subprefectural Bureau is located here. Located on the eastern edge of the Ishikari Plain, it was once a farming and mining center with the Ishikari Coalfield coalfields to the east, but in 1974 the last coal mine in the city, Asahi Coal Mine, closed. The city is served by the Hakodate Main Line and Muroran Main Line. In 1983, the Do-o Expressway was opened, and the city attracted businesses to the industrial park, and the recreational facility Iwamizawa Park was completed. The gentle slopes and natural levees were cultivated early on, and the city produces a lot of rice, wheat, beans, and onions, and food processing and brewing are also carried out. In March 2006, Kurisawa Town and Kita Village in Sorachi County were incorporated. 481.02 ^km2 . Population: 90,145 (2010).

北海道中西部の市。1943年市制。空知総合振興局所在地。石狩平野の東縁部を占め，東に石狩炭田の諸炭鉱をひかえる農村と炭鉱の中心都市であったが，1974年市内最後の朝日炭鉱が閉山。函館本線，室蘭本線が通じる。1983年道央自動車道が開通，工業団地への企業誘致が進み，レクリエーション施設いわみざわ公園が完成した。緩斜面や自然堤防は早くから耕地となり，米を多産し，麦類，豆類，タマネギを産し，食品加工や醸造も行われる。2006年３月空知郡栗沢町，北村を編入。481.02km²。９万145人（2010）。
