Fujisawa [city] - Fujisawa
A city in central Kanagawa Prefecture. Established as a city in 1940. Facing Sagami Bay to the south and the Sagamihara Plateau to the north, it developed mainly in the central plains. It includes Katase, Kugenuma, and Enoshima. The central city area in the plains was a post town on the Tokaido in the early modern period, and a temple town of Yugyo-ji Temple. The Tokaido Main Line was established in the mid-Meiji period, the Enoshima Electric Railway at the end of the Meiji period, and the Odakyu Electric Railway in the early Showa period, and it gradually developed into a tourist resort and a residential area for commuters to the Keihin area. From the 1950s, industrial parks were developed along the Tokaido Main Line and in the northern part of the rural area, and large factories for automobiles, machinery, etc. were established, raising the manufacturing shipment value of 1.716 trillion yen (2003), making it one of the top cities in the prefecture. Tsujido in the west is also a residential area. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 69.57 km 2 . 409,657 people (2010).

神奈川県中部の市。1940年市制。南は相模湾に面し,北部は相模原台地で,中部の平野部を中心に発達。片瀬,鵠沼(くげぬま),江の島を含む。平野部にある中心市街は近世は東海道の宿場町,遊行(ゆぎょう)寺の門前町であった。明治中期に東海道本線,明治末に江ノ島電鉄,昭和初期に小田急電鉄が通じ,次第に観光保養地,京浜への通勤住宅地として発展した。東海道本線沿いや農村地域の北部に昭和30年代から工業団地が造成され,自動車,機械などの大工場が進出して1兆716億円(2003)の製造品出荷額を上げ,県内上位。西部の辻堂も住宅地をなす。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。69.57km2。40万9657人(2010)。
