Fujioka [city] - Fujioka

Japanese: 藤岡[市] - ふじおか
Fujioka [city] - Fujioka
A city in southern Gunma Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The eastern half is an alluvial plateau between the Kanna River and the Ayu River, and the western half is mountainous. The central city area was a castle town of Ashida Castle, built by the Ashida clan during the Momoyama period, and in the early modern period it developed as a side road on the Nakasendo road, a post town on the Shinano Betsuji road, and a market town. It is served by the Hachiko Line and the Kan'etsu Expressway, and the Joshinetsu Expressway branches off from it. Silkworm farming has been popular since ancient times, and roofing tiles are a specialty of the city, but since the 1960s an industrial complex has been developed, and transportation equipment, electrical machinery, and other industries are also carried out. There are many ancient tombs, such as the Hongo Haniwa Kiln Site (historic site) and Nanakoshiyama Ancient Tomb (historic site), as well as Sanbashiki Gorge (a scenic spot) and Yashio Onsen. In January 2006, Onishi Town in Tano County was incorporated. The area is 180.29 km 2 . 67,975 people (2010).
