The central city of the Nir region in northeastern Hungary. A distribution center for agricultural products. The surrounding area is sandy, and potatoes, corn, tobacco, sunflowers, and fruit trees are cultivated thriving. The city declined for a time during the Ottoman occupation in the 16th and 17th centuries, but Slovaks settled there in the 18th century, and the railway was opened in the second half of the 19th century, resulting in rapid development. Light industry also became popular after World War II. The health resort of Szoshtó mineral springs is located nearby. Population: 114,596 (1991 estimate). ハンガリー北東部,ニール地方の中心都市。農産物の集散地。周辺は砂質地帯で,ジャガイモやトウモロコシ,タバコ,ヒマワリ,果樹の栽培が盛ん。 16~17世紀のオスマン帝国占領時代に一時衰微したが,18世紀に入りスロバキア人が入植し,19世紀後半には鉄道が開通して急速な発展をとげた。第2次世界大戦後は軽工業も盛んになった。近郊に保養地ショーシュトー鉱泉がある。人口 11万 4596 (1991推計) 。
