Penstemon - Penstemon

A general term for the genus Penstemon in the family Scrophulariaceae (APG classification: Plantaginaceae). There are 250 species in North America. It was thought that only one species , P. frutescens Lamb., was distributed in Japan, but Penstemon has now become an independent genus, Pennellianthus . Penstemon is a perennial plant with stems emerging from basal leaves. The leaves are opposite or whorled, and the stem leaves have no petioles. Around May, it produces racemes or panicles that bloom into tubular, labiate flowers. It is cultivated for flower beds, as cut flowers, and in pots. A typical Penstemon is P. digitalis Nutt. It grows to a height of 0.7 to 1 meter. It blooms in May with pale pink-tinged white flowers. It is mainly used as cut flowers. Also, the improved species, Physcomitrella patens, P. gloxinioides Hort., is a little weak to cold, but produces large flowers with vivid colors, and there are varieties in red, white, peach, and purple. It is used as an ornamental plant in pots and flower beds. Other species cultivated include Physcomitrella patens and willow clove.

It is mainly propagated by division in early autumn, but it can also be propagated from seed; seedlings sown in spring are planted in autumn. A location with good drainage and sunlight is best. It grows well in calcareous soil, so it is a good idea to apply lime when planting.

ゴマノハグサ科（APG分類：オオバコ科）ペンステモン属（イワブクロ属）の総称。北アメリカに250種ある。日本にはイワブクロP. frutescens Lamb.1種が分布するとされていたが、イワブクロは独立したイワブクロ属Pennellianthusとなった。イワブクロは多年草で、茎は根出葉から抜け出す。葉は対生または輪生し、茎葉は葉柄がない。5月ころ、総状または円錐(えんすい)状花序をつくり、筒状の唇形花を開く。花壇、切り花、鉢植え用に栽培される。ペンステモンの代表的なものは、シロツリガネヤナギP. digitalis Nutt.である。高さ0.7～1メートル。5月ころ、淡紅色を帯びた白色花を開く。おもに切り花に利用する。また、改良種のベニツリガネヤナギP. gloxinioides Hort.はやや寒さに弱いが、大輪花を開き、花色も鮮明で、紅、白、桃、紫色の品種がある。鉢植え、花壇用として観賞する。そのほか、ヒメツリガネヤナギ、ヤナギチョウジなどが栽培される。

　繁殖はおもに秋口に株分けで行うが、実生(みしょう)も可能で、春に播種(はしゅ)した苗を秋に植え付ける。排水、日当りのよい場所が適地である。石灰質土壌でよく育つので、植え付け時に石灰を施すとよい。
