An observatory equipped with a coronagraph, a special telescope for observing the corona, located on the summit of a high mountain where the weather conditions are good and the atmosphere is thin. The first was built in 1930 by B. Riot of France on Pic du Midi (2,860m) in the Pyrenees. Regular observations are also carried out at seven other locations: Arosa in Switzerland, Wendelstein in Germany, Kanzelhöhe in Austria, Climax and Sacramento Peak in the United States, and Marishiten-dake on Mount Norikura (2,876m) in Japan. All of them are built on mountain summits to avoid scattering by the atmosphere.

気象条件がよく大気層の薄い高山山頂で，コロナ観測用の特殊望遠鏡であるコロナグラフを備えた天文台。 1930年フランスの B.リオにより，ピレネー山中のピク・デュ・ミディ (2860m) に建てられたのが最初。その他スイスのアローザ，ドイツのベンデルシュタイン，オーストリアのカンツェルヘーエ，アメリカのクライマックス，サクラメントピーク，日本の乗鞍山摩利支天岳 (2876m) の計7ヵ所で規則正しい観測が行われている。いずれも大気による散乱を避けた山頂に建てられている。
