Imperial Valley

A dry basin that stretches from southeastern California in the United States to parts of Baja California in Mexico. Part of the Colorado Desert, most of it is below sea level. It once formed a valley that continued into the Gulf of California, but was separated into a basin by the formation of the Colorado River delta. The first irrigation works were completed in 1902, but three years later the Colorado River flooded and the Salton Sea was formed to the north. Irrigation progressed rapidly with the completion of Imperial Dam (1938) and the All-American Waterway (1940), and the area became a fertile agricultural region producing a variety of agricultural products on 2,000 km2 of cultivated land.
