Money spring - Kasen

Japanese:
Money spring - Kasen

A type of coin from the Xin dynasty of Wang Mang in China. First minted in the first year of Tenpo (14th AD). A copper coin with a circular opening, with the character "Ka" (currency) cast on the right and the character "Sen" (spring) cast on the left. In Japan, it was collected by Dr. Nakayama Heijiro in the sand dunes of Shima Tokomatsubara, Itoshima City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and was identified as having been found accompanying Yayoi-style pottery, providing a key clue for determining the Yayoi period. Since then, more and more discoveries have been made, and there are now more than 10 locations where coin springs have been excavated from Yayoi period ruins. Among these, one coin spring was discovered in a pit at the Kamei site in Osaka Prefecture along with pottery fragments of Kinai style IV to V, and one coin spring was discovered in the upper layer (first half of the late Yayoi period in Kyushu) at the Harunotsuji site in Iki, Nagasaki Prefecture. This evidence indicates that the end of the middle or beginning of the late Yayoi period was from the middle to the latter half of the 1st century.
