The chemical formula is GeO 2 . It is a colorless solid, and exists in water-soluble hexagonal crystals and insoluble tetragonal crystals. The transition temperature is 1033°C, with the water-soluble form being more stable at lower temperatures. The density of tetragonal crystals is 6.24 g/cm3 and the melting point is 1086°C. On the other hand, the density of hexagonal crystals is relatively small at 4.23 g/cm3 and the melting point is 1116°C. The density varies slightly depending on the method of heat treatment. When melted, it is cooled rapidly to obtain a water-soluble amorphous solid. The water-insoluble form is also insoluble in acid, but is gradually corroded by concentrated alkali.
