Miharada ruins - Miharadaishi
Located in Miharada, Akagi Village, Seta District, Gunma Prefecture, this is a large settlement site dating mainly to the late middle Jomon period. Excavations were carried out by the Gunma Prefectural Enterprise Bureau from 1971 to 1973 for the construction of the prefectural Miharada Housing Estate, and the site was destroyed after the excavations were completed. The site is at the end of a hilly plateau on the western foot of Mount Akagi, 1.6 km northeast of Shibukawa Station on the Joetsu Line. Because it was thickly covered by the pumice layer and ash layer of Mount Haruna's Futatsudake, it was not initially thought to be a very large settlement. As a result of the investigation, a settlement consisting of 341 dwelling sites and 1,400 burial pits and storage holes was revealed within a circular area with a diameter of 130 m, but as some areas remain unexplored, it was probably even larger.
