Saru River

Japanese: 沙流川 - さるがわ
Saru River

It is the longest river in the Hidaka Subprefectural Bureau of Hokkaido. It is a first-class river. It originates in the northern Hidaka Mountains, flows southwest through the northeastern part of Hidaka Town and Biratori Town, and empties into the Pacific Ocean in the Tomikawa area in the southwest of Hidaka Town. It is 104 km long and has a drainage basin of 1,350 km2. The middle and lower reaches are narrow valley plains, rice paddy areas, and rural areas. The middle and upper reaches, including the Iwachishi Dam for power generation, are also full of gorges. The Nissho Road (National Highways 237 and 274) that runs along the river crosses the Hidaka Mountains at Nissho Pass and is the main transportation route to Tokachi. The former JNR Tomuchi Line has been converted into a bus line.
