Tomokichi Fukurai

Psychologist. Born in Gifu Prefecture. Studied at Tokyo Imperial University and received a doctorate in literature. Pioneer of hypnosis and parapsychology in Japan. While an assistant professor at Tokyo Imperial University, he began experimental research on clairvoyance and thoughtography in 1910 (Meiji 43) on Mifune Chizuko (1886-1911) and others, and in 1913 (Taisho 2) published "Clairvoyance and Thoughtography," announcing that his findings were fact. However, he was ordered to take a leave of absence because he was not suitable for university research, and subsequently retired. Later, he continued his research into psychic phenomena and served as principal of Senshin Girls' High School and professor at Koyasan University. He died in Sendai. After his death, the "Fukurai Psychology Institute" was established in the same place. His books include "Psychology Essence," "Hypnotic Psychology," " Clairvoyance and Thoughtography ," and "Psychics and the Mysterious World."

心理学者。岐阜県生まれ。東京帝国大学に学び文学博士。日本における催眠・超心理学の先駆者。東京帝大助教授のとき、1910年（明治43）から御船千鶴子(みふねちづこ)（1886―1911）らについて透視・念写の実験的研究を始め、1913年（大正2）『透視と念写』を著し、それらが事実であると発表した。しかし、大学での研究に適さないとの理由で休職を命じられ、引き続き退職、のち、心霊研究を進めるとともに宣真(せんしん)高等女学校校長、高野山(こうやさん)大学教授を歴任、仙台で死去。死後同地に「福来心理学研究所」が設立された。著書に『心理学精義』『催眠心理学』『Clairvoyance and Thoughtography』『心霊と神秘世界』などがある。
