Something that is given in or directly present in perception, it is the correlate of sensation and the object of direct or active consciousness in perception. The fact that this consciousness is in perception is important for analyzing it. Direct here means that it is obtained without the aid of inference or other intellectual processes. In the field of philosophy, there has been much discussion about the difference between such sense-givens and ordinary material objects (such as chairs or desks).
