Egyptian cobra (English spelling)

A member of the Elapidae family of the order Lacertilia. Along with the Indian cobra, it is one of the most well-known venomous snakes. Its body is yellowish brown, and its neck is flat but does not expand much. It is highly aggressive and venomous, and can grow to a length of nearly 2m, making it a great danger. It is engraved on various ornaments of ancient Egypt, such as the golden mask of King Tutankhamun, and it is also said that the venomous snake used by Cleopatra to commit suicide was this cobra. It is found in relatively dry areas of northern and eastern Africa and southwestern Asia.

トカゲ目コブラ科。インドコブラとともに，最もよく知られている毒ヘビの一つ。体は全体に黄褐色で，頸部は扁平になるがあまり広がらない。攻撃性も毒性も強く，体長も 2m近くになるほど大きいので，危険性は大きい。トゥトアンクアメン (ツタンカーメン) 王の黄金の仮面など，古代エジプトのさまざまな装飾品に刻まれており，また，クレオパトラが自殺するのに使った毒ヘビも，このコブラだったのではないかといわれている。アフリカ北部，東部およびアジア南西部の比較的乾燥した地域に分布する。
