Pocket - Pocket (English spelling)

Pocket - Pocket (English spelling)

A small pouch for carrying money or small items. It also refers to a small pouch with an opening at the top or side that is attached to the outside or inside of clothing. Pockets were first attached to clothing in the 16th century; before that, money, keys, and small items were wrapped in cloth and tucked into the chest, the corners of the hood, or the cuffs of the sleeves. This cloth eventually became a drawstring-shaped bag that was hung from a decorative belt around the waist and was used by both men and women in the Middle Ages. Practical pouches were made in the 16th century, but with the fashion for full, rococo-style skirts, pockets were made inside them and pouches disappeared. However, after the French Revolution, when skirts became less full, pouches were used again, and have since become indispensable to this day.

Meanwhile, pockets as we know them today first appeared in the second half of the 16th century, when side pockets were added to the haute chausses, the men's undergarment of the time, to hold decorative pocket watches. Later, long outerwear such as the justcorps and abier à la française, as well as vests and gilets, were fitted with lidded or slit pockets on both sides, as seen today. Following this example, similar pockets were also added to women's suits, which began to become popular around 1870. Today, pockets have become a design element that is both practical and decorative, and are attached to many garments.

There are many different types of pockets: outside pockets, which are attached to the outside of a garment, inside pockets, which are attached to the inside of a garment, patch pockets, which are made by sewing fabric to the garment from the outside, set-in or cut-in pockets, which are made by cutting a slit into the garment and inserting a pocket inside, flap pockets with rain covers, double-welted and single-welted pockets with welt finishes, seam pockets with openings made using seams, side pockets on both sides of a jacket, box pockets (welt pockets) with rectangular pieces of fabric attached to the pocket openings, false pockets that are just decorative, through pockets that have no bottom and are completely open, trouser pockets on the side seams of trousers, and accordion pockets with gussets.
