...An ethnic group with roots in North Asia, who later became Turkic and live in Central Asia. They number 2.53 million (1989) in Central Asia, formerly part of the Soviet Union, and are the main ethnic group that makes up the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. They speak the Kyrgyz language, call themselves Kyrgyz, and are mostly Sunni Muslims. They are thought to have originated from an ethnic group that lived in the Minusinsk region in the upper reaches of the Yenisei River in ancient times, and was already known as the Kenkun or Hakun during the Han Dynasty in China. In this region, not only did people hunt and raise livestock in the forests and grasslands, but they also engaged in small-scale irrigation agriculture, and metallurgy and handicrafts that utilized mineral resources, as exemplified by the Minusinsk metallurgical culture (Tashtyk culture).

… Turk Large and small stone monuments erected during the Aztec period (552-744). Of these, the Kyol Tegin inscription, discovered in the Hosho Tsaidam area of the old Orkhon River basin, was erected in 732, and the Bilge Hagan inscription, discovered nearby, was erected in 735. The Tonyukuk inscription, discovered in Bayin Tsokt upstream of the Tora River, is believed to date to an even earlier period than the previous two.
