A village in Aso County, eastern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 3,010 (1995). Located south of Mount Aso. The northern part occupies a corner of the crater basin of the Aso Caldera, Nango Valley, with the Shirakawa River flowing northwest along the northern border. The southern part is on the northern slope of the Aso outer rim. Agriculture is the main industry, with rice and highland vegetable cultivation, primarily tomatoes, and livestock farming thriving. In the early Edo period, three waterways were excavated to draw water from the Shirakawa River, at Hokinoshita, Biwakubi, and Kamikawahara, creating 400 hectares of rice paddies, and the area became a grain-producing region. Resort village development is underway, including Clean Pier Minamiaso. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
