Located in Washington DC. Construction began in 1793 based on the design by W. Thornton, which won the second design competition. It is a Palladianist building with a rotunda in the center, but was destroyed in 1814 by an attack by the British army, leaving only the north wing. B. Latrobe began the reconstruction between 1815 and 1817, C. Bulfinch took over, and the current central section was completed in 1828. T. Walter was in charge of the expansion from 1951 to 1965. The dome was replaced with a cast iron one with an inner diameter of 30m and a height of 68m, and the north and south wings were added, completing the current form. The expanded central dome and north and south rotundas, unlike the classical form of the main part, are reminiscent of the baroque tendency of the Second French Empire.
