Years of birth: unknown. A physician from the mid-Heian period. A member of a family of physicians who claimed to be descendants of Sun Quan of Wu, who came to Japan via Baekje during the reign of Emperor Kinmei. They took the name Hachita because they lived in Hachida-go, Otori-gun, Izumi Province (Osaka Prefecture), and Yakushi because they practiced medicine, but in 834 during the reign of Emperor Ninmyo, a family was given the surname Fukane no Sukune, which branched off from the family. Sukehito's grandfather was Fukane Munetsugu, and as a disciple of the head of the Bureau of Medicine, Sugawara Yukisada, he progressed from Uemon Isha to Gon-i Hakase and Dai-i Hakase, and was known as a renowned physician. Around 918, he selected Honzo Wamei, Japan's oldest dictionary of Chinese and Japanese drug names. <Works> "Shochu Yoho" and "Yōjōshō" <References> Akira Ishihara "Research on the Family Lineage of Hachida Yakushi" (Reprint of "Itan" No. 17), Taku Shinmura "Research on the Ancient Medical Official System" (Muneta Hajime) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
