Fukakusa

Japanese: 深草 - ふかくさ

A place name in the northern part of Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. It is located at the south end of the Higashiyama mountain range, at the foot of the southwest side of Mount Inari. In the past, it was the residence of the Hata clan, but later became a villa area for aristocrats. After Toyotomi Hideyoshi built Fushimi Castle, it developed as a temple town for Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine along the road connecting Kyoto and Fushimi . It is home to the Fukakusa Mausoleum of Emperor Ninmyo and Fukakusa Kita Mausoleum (Fukakusa Twelve Imperial Tombs). It was known as a famous spot for viewing quails and the moon. [Etymology] As the area was home to the imperial family and powerful families, poems such as "If the cherry blossoms in the fields of Fukakusa are in a state of mind, then this year alone they will bloom in ink-dyed blooms (Ueno Mineo)" (Kokinshu, Aishou) were also written, "If I leave the village where I have lived for many years, then why would it be Fukakusa no okami" (Kokinshu, Zosha), "If it were a field, the quail would cry, and as the years go by, would you not come?" (ibid.), and "When the evening comes, the autumn wind in the fields penetrates my body, and the quail cries, Fukakusa no sato (Fujiwara Shunzei)" (Senzai, Autumn Beginning), which is based on this exchange of poems, gave the image of a village with deep grass and lonely quails crying. In "Shin Kokinshu" and later, the image of a village haunted by loneliness was maintained, although moonlight, snow, dew, and the sound of a burial mound were also added.

京都市伏見区北部の地名。東山連峰の南端、稲荷山南西側のふもとにある。古くは秦氏一族の居住地であったが、のちに貴族の別荘地となる。豊臣秀吉の伏見城築城後、京都と伏見を結ぶ街道沿いに伏見稲荷大社の門前町として発達した。仁明天皇深草陵、深草北陵（深草十二帝陵）がある。鶉(うずら)、月の名所として知られた。[語誌]皇室・権門の陵墓があったところから、「深草の野辺の桜し心あらば今年ばかりは墨染めに咲け〈上野岑雄〉」〔古今‐哀傷〕などともうたわれたが、「年を経て住みこし里を出でて往なばいとど深草野とやなりなむ」〔古今‐雑下〕「野とならば鶉と鳴きて年は経むかりにだにやは君が来ざらむ」〔同〕や、この贈答歌を本歌とした「夕されば野辺の秋風身にしみて鶉鳴くなりふか草の里〈藤原俊成〉」〔千載‐秋上〕によって、草深くさびしい、鶉の鳴く里というイメージで詠まれた。「新古今」以降では月光・雪・露・砧の音なども配されるが、さびしさのつきまとう里としてのイメージは踏襲された。
