Sumako Fukao

Sumako Fukao

Poet. Her real name was Ogino Shigeno. She was born into an old family in Tamba, Hyogo Prefecture. She transferred from Kyoto Normal School to Kyoto Kikka Girls' High School. She married but lost her husband to illness. She studied under Yosano Akiko and published poetry collections such as "Scarlet Sigh" (1922), "Spotted Cat", "Curse", and "Anxiety" (all 1925). She also traveled to Europe many times, studying biology and the flute in Paris, and published romantic, lyrical works. After World War II, she wrote many works, including "Western Lantern and Flowers" (1951) and "Collection of Poems by Sumako Fukao" (1952), and was also active in the peace movement and women's movement.

詩人。本名荻野(おぎの)志げの。兵庫県丹波(たんば)の旧家に生まれる。京都師範学校から転じて京都菊花高等女学校を卒業。結婚したが病気で夫を失い、与謝野晶子(よさのあきこ)に師事し、詩集『真紅の溜息(ためいき)』(1922)、『斑猫(はんみょう)』『呪詛(じゅそ)』『焦躁(しょうそう)』(いずれも1925)等を出版し、たびたび渡欧してパリで生物学やフルートを学び浪漫(ろうまん)的詩情豊かな作品を発表。第二次世界大戦後は『洋燈(らんぷ)と花』(1951)、『深尾須磨子詩集』(1952)のほか多数の著作があり、平和運動、女性運動にも活躍した。
