…He was one of the first to recognize the value of new materials that emerged from the Yin Ruins and Dunhuang in the early 20th century, and made efforts to collect and organize them. During his stay in Japan, he published many collections of materials, including “Lost Documents from the Stone Chamber of Mingsha,” “Liusha Falling Sheets,” and “Texts from the Mangluo Tomb.” In particular, the three volumes of “Yin Ruins Documents” (first, second, and third volumes) were the first illustrated collections of oracle bone scripts printed using modern printing, and together with the commentary “Yin Ruins Documents Commentary,” they laid the foundation for oracle bone studies. He returned to China in 1919 and lived in Tianjin, where he became the teacher of the deposed Emperor Puyi of Xuantong. During that time, he contributed to the preservation of materials and the foundation of academic studies by preventing the documents (docans) from the Ming and Qing dynasties in the Imperial Cabinet Treasury from being leaked and discarded as waste paper, and by establishing the Oriental Studies Association. …

…20世紀初頭の殷墟（いんきよ）や敦煌から発現した新資料の価値をいち早く認識し，その収集と整理に努力してきたが，日本滞在中に《鳴沙石室佚書》《流沙墜簡》をはじめ《芒洛冢墓（ぼうらくちようぼ）遺文》など数多くの資料集を出版した。とりわけ，前･後･続3編の《殷墟書契》は近代的印刷による甲骨文字のはじめての図録集で，その解説《殷墟書契考釈》とともに甲骨学研究の基礎を築いたものである。19年に帰国し，以後は天津に住み宣統廃帝溥儀（ふぎ）の師となり，その間，宮中内閣大庫の明･清時代の文書類(檔案（とうあん）)が故紙として流出，廃棄されんとするのを防ぎ，あるいは東方学会を設立するなど，資料保存，学問の基礎作りに貢献した。…
