A Tendai sect (Enryaku-ji school) temple located in Anshu Inariyama-cho, Yamashina-ku, Kyoto City. Its name is Gohozan Ankoku-in Izumo-ji Temple. The principal image is Bishamonten. It is said to have been founded in 703 (Taiho 3) at the request of Emperor Mommu, or by Dengyo Daishi (Saicho). It was originally located in Izumoji (present-day Kamigyo-ku). In the early Kamakura period, Enchi (Taira no Chikanori) consolidated three abandoned temples associated with the Taira clan: Byodo-ji Temple (founded by Prince Kuzuhara), Sonju-ji Temple (founded by Taira no Chikanori), and Goho-ji Temple (founded by the Taira no Han family). The old temple on the Izumo road was famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot. It was burned down many times, and in 1611 (Keicho 16) Emperor Goyozei ordered Tenkai to restore it, and in 1665 (Kanbun 5) Sojo Kokai built the temple at its current location. After Prince Koben of Rinno-ji Temple entered the temple, it became a monzeki temple, and in the Edo period, Prince Rinnoji-no-miya took over as a temple priest. The temple's landholding is 1,070 koku. The Toin Kinsada Diary (written in ink on paper) (Nanboku-cho period), the Daihatnehan Sutra Scroll (Nara period), and the Tenrei style of writing in ink on paper (Kamakura period) are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The temple is crowded with pilgrims during the first visit of the New Year. [Tamura Kosuke] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
