Japanese: マガン(真雁) - マガン（英語表記）white‐fronted goose

A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It is the most common species of goose that migrates to Japan, and most of the geese depicted in Japanese paintings are of this species. It breeds in the Arctic and migrates to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in winter. It migrates to Japan as a winter bird, living in open areas such as lakes, marshes, tidal flats, and rice fields, and feeding on grass leaves, roots, and fruits. It once migrated in large numbers throughout Japan, but now it only spends the winter in the Hokuriku and Tohoku regions. Total length approximately 72 cm. Its plumage is dark brown overall, with a slightly lighter color underneath.

カモ目カモ科の鳥（イラスト）。日本に渡来するガン類の中ではいちばんふつうの種で，日本画に描かれるガンも大部分は本種である。北極圏で繁殖し，冬季には北半球の温帯地方に渡る。日本には冬鳥として渡来し，湖沼，湿原，干潟，水田などの広い場所にすみ，草の葉，根，実などを食べている。かつては日本全国に数多く渡来していたが，現在では北陸および東北地方で越冬するだけになった。全長約72cm。羽色は全体に暗褐色で，下面は多少淡色である。
