…Most of the Japanese studies scholars active from the early 20th century through the 1930s were trained outside of universities. Historian James Murdoch (1856-1921), writer L. Hearn, and Shinto scholar Richard Arthur Ponsonby-Fane (1878-1937) all worked as English teachers in Japan while conducting their research. This tendency was also shared by AD Waley, the translator of The Tale of Genji, historian GB Sansom, Charles Ralph Boxer (1904- ), and economist George Cyril Allen (1900-82), all of whom achieved notable results from the 1930s onwards. …
