Phonon echo

Phonon echo
This refers to the phenomenon and pulse signal in which, when two ultrasonic pulses or one ultrasonic pulse and one electromagnetic pulse are applied to a material such as an insulator, semiconductor, or metal, separated by a time interval τ, a phase-coherent ultrasonic or electromagnetic pulse signal is emitted at a time 2τ after a further τ. There are cases where the ultrasonic waves are propagating through the material, and cases where the material is vibrating in acoustic resonance. This phenomenon occurs when atoms or electrons in the material are excited by ultrasonic or electromagnetic waves, and does not occur in linear cases where a simple superposition of the waves excited by the first pulse and the waves excited by the second pulse occurs, but only in nonlinear cases where the product of the two waves creates a new wave.
