Zinjanthropus - Zinjanthropus (English spelling)

The taxonomic genus name given to the ape-man skull discovered in the Oldway Valley in Tanzania by British anthropologist L. Leakey in 1959. Its official name is Zinjanthropus boisei. It is a compound word of Zinj (Arabic for East Africa) and Anthropos (Greek for man). Since Oldowan stone tools were excavated in the vicinity, ape-men attracted the attention of the academic community as they possessed the crudest cultural remains, but Leakey later discovered human bones he called Homo habilis in the layer below the excavation layer, and concluded that the stone tool maker was Homo habilis. Today, Zinjanthropus is considered to be a member of Australopithecus robustus, or should be Australopithecus boisei.

イギリスの人類学者のL・リーキーが、1959年にタンザニアのオルドワイ渓谷で発見した猿人頭骨に名づけられた分類学上の属名。正式にはジンジャントロプス・ボイセイという。ジンジ（アラビア語で東アフリカ）とアントロポス（ギリシア語でヒト）の合成語。付近からオルドワン型石器が出土していることから、猿人がもっとも粗製ながら文化遺物を有していたとして、学界の関心を集めたが、リーキーはのちにその出土層の下の層からホモ・ハビリスと称する人骨を発見し、石器製作者はホモ・ハビリスであるとした。今日、ジンジャントロプスはアウストラロピテクス・ロブストゥスの一員、もしくはアウストラロピテクス・ボイセイとすべきものとみなされている。
