A village in Kuma County in southern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 4,118 (1995). It borders Hitoyoshi City to the southwest. The southern part of the village occupies a corner of the Hitoyoshi Basin, while the northern part is occupied by hills and the Kyushu Mountains. The Mae River and Yamada River, tributaries of the Kuma River, flow south, and farmland and settlements are found along the rivers. Since the Middle Ages, the village has been the property of the Sagara clan, and in the early modern period it was the territory of the Hitoyoshi Domain of the Sagara clan. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, and rice, miscellaneous grains, tobacco, tea, and prince melons are cultivated, as well as an abundance of mountain produce such as shiitake mushrooms, wasabi, and chestnuts. 熊本県南部,球磨(くま)郡の村。人口4118(1995)。南西は人吉市に接する。南部は人吉盆地の一角を占めるが,北部は丘陵と九州山地で占められる。球磨川の支流万江(まえ)川,山田川が南流し,川沿いに耕地,集落が開ける。中世以降,相良氏の所領となり,近世にも相良氏の人吉藩領であった。主産業は農林業で,米,雑穀,タバコ,茶,プリンスメロンの栽培などが行われるほか,シイタケ,ワサビ,クリなど,豊富な山の幸を産する。
