A deciduous shrub of the Caprifoliaceae family (APG classification: Viburnum family). In the Chubu region, Viburnum is called Yozome, so it is thought that this name means male Viburnum. However, contrary to its name, the branches, leaves, and inflorescences give a rather delicate and weak impression. It grows to about 2 meters in height. The undersides of the leaves have long, flat hairs, and the petioles are short. When they dry, the leaves turn black along with the flowers. The inflorescences are corymb-shaped, with thin stalks that tend to droop, and there are only a few flowers. The flowers bloom in April and May, with white or slightly pink corollas. The fruits ripen red in autumn. It is a species endemic to Japan, and is commonly found in the mountainous areas of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu.
