This usually refers to a plaster bandage. Gips (German) means plaster, and taking advantage of the property of calcined plaster powder solidifying when water is added, a piece of degreased cotton cloth is sprinkled with calcined plaster powder, soaked in warm water containing a small amount of calcined alum, and when air bubbles have stopped appearing, the cloth is wrapped around the affected area to quickly form a fixed bandage. This is a plaster bandage, and is widely used for fractures. It is also used as a plaster bed or plaster corset for spinal disorders. In recent years, synthetic resin ones have been used, which have the advantage that they soften in warm water, take a short time to soften, and do not produce powdery dust.

普通はギプス包帯をさす。Gips（ドイツ語）は石膏の意で，焼石膏粉に水を加えると固化する性質を利用し，脱脂木綿布に焼石膏末をまぶしたものを，少量の焼ミョウバンを加えた温水にひたし気泡の出終わるのを待って患部に巻くとすみやかに固定包帯となる。これがギプス包帯で骨折等に広く用いられる。また脊椎疾患ではギプスベッド，ギプスコルセット等として利用する。近年は，合成樹脂製のものが用いられるが，これには温湯で軟化し，軟化時間が短く，粉末屑が出ないという利便性がある。
