A former town in Usa District, northern Oita Prefecture. Occupying the Era River basin, a tributary of the Yakkan River, the town is mostly covered by forests, producing cedar, cypress, yuzu, and shiitake mushrooms. The river terraces are being converted into rice paddies, and vegetables are also produced. There is a habitat for giant salamanders (a natural monument). 大分県北部,宇佐郡の旧町。駅館(やっかん)川支流の恵良(えら)川流域を占め,大部分は山林で,スギ,ヒノキのほか,ユズ,シイタケを産する。河岸段丘面の水田化が進み,野菜も産する。オオサンショウウオ生息地(天然記念物)がある。2005年3月宇佐郡安心院町と宇佐市へ編入。113.62km2。5224人(2003)。
