Dragon slaying - Ryutaij

Japanese: 竜退治 - りゅうたいじ

This ancient story is widely known around the world and is thought to be the origin of Japan's "monkey god slaying" tale. A young man obtains a famous sword and a dog. He learns that a princess is to be offered as a sacrifice to a many-headed dragon (a water spirit, a giant) that demands a sacrifice at regular intervals, and attempts to slay the dragon with the dog's help. When the dragon appears, he slays it with the dog's help and cuts out its tongue as proof. A rival appears and claims to have slayed the dragon, and is set to marry the princess, but just then the young man, who is her true rescuer, sends the dog as a messenger to inform the princess of his presence.

世界的に分布が広く，古く，日本の〈猿神退治〉の源流と考えられる物語。若者が名刀と犬を手に入れる。一定間隔で犠牲を要求する多頭の竜(水の精，巨人)への犠牲として，ある王女がささげられることを知り，犬の助けを得て竜退治を試みる。竜が現れると，犬の援助を得て退治し，その舌を証拠として切り取る。ライバルが現れ，自分が竜を退治したと称して王女と結婚することになるが，ちょうどそのとき真の救助者である若者が，王女に犬を使者として送って自分の存在を知らせる。
