In Japan, the regulation of unfair price indication is mainly carried out by the Fair Trade Commission based on the Act on Prevention of Unfair Premiums and Misrepresentations (promulgated in 1962, abbreviated as the Act on Prevention of Unfair Premiums and Misrepresentations). Looking at specific examples of unfair price indication based on the operational standards established by the Commission, there are cases where a fictitious high figure is shown for A yen (comparison price) to make B yen (actual selling price) appear cheaper than it actually is, where the manufacturer's suggested retail price, which is the comparison price, is itself set intentionally high, where there is unfair double price indication, where a bait-and-switch advertisement advertises a cheap product that is not actually sold, or where a price is used that is contrary to the facts, etc. In addition, in recent years, the display of unit prices to make it easier for consumers to compare prices has been promoted mainly by ordinance, and laws that require price indication in certain fields have also been enacted (such as the Installment Sales Act and the Door-to-Door Sales Act).
