Oberth, Hermann Julius
Born: June 25, 1894, Hermannstadt, Transylvania
[Died] December 28, 1989. Nuremberg German engineer. A pioneering researcher in modern rocketry and space flight. Son of a doctor. Studied medicine in Munich, but interrupted his studies during World War I. After the war, he switched to space flight research, working on rocket design and other subjects. Professor at Vienna University of Technology (1938). Naturalized in Germany in 1940. In 1923, he published Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen (Rockets into Planetary Space), the first to develop a basic theory on several crucial issues for humankind to venture into space. He presented astonishing ideas on the structure of liquid-fuel rockets, as well as two-stage rockets and artificial satellites. This book was not well received at the time because it dealt with a lot of mathematics and was theoretically far beyond the level of the time, but it later gave a great stimulus to space rocket research in Europe. In July 1930, he completed a new type of liquid rocket engine called a conical jet. After World War II, he led rocket research in Switzerland, Italy, and the United States, and continued to do cutting-edge work, including being one of the earliest researchers in the development of vehicles for lunar landings.
