A former town in Ukiha District, southeastern Fukuoka Prefecture. Occupying the northeastern part of the Chikushi Plain and the left bank of the Chikugo River, the town produces rice, wheat, oysters, grapes and other fruits, and also cultivates vegetables. The main settlement, which is on the Kyudai Main Line, is home to thriving small and medium-sized industries such as lumber, food and rubber. In the foothills to the south, there are many decorated ancient tombs, such as the Hinooka Tomb and Mezurashizuka Tomb (both historic sites). In March 2005, it merged with Ukiha Town, Ukiha District, to become a city, forming Ukiha City. 28.29 km2 . Population: 17,648 (2003).

A former town in Akaiwa County, eastern Okayama Prefecture. The main settlement is Susai, at the confluence of the Yoshii River and Yoshino River. There are many settlements on the flat land of the Kibi Plateau, where rice and vegetable cultivation are practiced with restraint. Inamaki is the largest brush-shape producing area in Japan. In March 2005, it merged with Sanyo Town, Akasaka Town, and Kumayama Town in Akaiwa County to become a city. 86.07 km2 . 5,566 people (2003).

A former town in Kita Matsuura County in northern Nagasaki Prefecture. Occupying the central part of the Kita Matsuura Peninsula, the town is mostly hilly and mountainous. It was once a mining town in the Sasebo coalfields, but as mines closed one after another, the town began to attract businesses to the abandoned coal mine sites. The town also produces rice, cultivates in greenhouses, and raises beef cattle. The Matsuura Railway runs through the town. There is the Fukui Cave (historic site). In April 2005, it was incorporated into Sechibaru Town, Kita Matsuura County, and Sasebo City. 27.09 km2 . 6,425 people (2003).

Yoshii [town] [Yoshii]

An old town in Tano County, southern Gunma Prefecture. Occupying the plains of the Kabura River valley, a tributary of the Tone River, the central settlement developed as a post town and market town on the Nakasendo side road. The town is served by the Joshin Electric Railway and the Joshinetsu Expressway. Silkworm farming is thriving here, and shiitake mushrooms are also produced in abundance. The town is home to the Tako Monument, one of the three Kozuke monuments. Incorporated into Takasaki City in June 2009. 58.35 km2 . Population: 24,987 (2005).

岡山県東部,赤磐(あかいわ)郡の旧町。主集落は吉井川と吉野川合流点の周匝(すさい)。吉備(きび)高原平たん面上に多くの集落があり,米作,野菜の抑制栽培が行われる。稲蒔(いなまき)は全国一の筆軸産地。2005年3月赤磐郡山陽町,赤坂町,熊山町と合併し市制,赤磐市となる。86.07km2。5566人(2003)。

長崎県北部,北松浦郡の旧町。北松浦半島中部を占め,ほとんどが丘陵性の山地。佐世保炭田の炭鉱町であったが,閉山が相次ぎ,炭鉱跡地へ企業誘致を進めた。米作,施設園芸,肉牛肥育も行う。松浦鉄道が通じる。福井洞穴(史跡)がある。2005年4月北松浦郡世知原町と佐世保市へ編入。27.09km2。6425人(2003)。

群馬県南部,多野郡の旧町。利根川の支流鏑(かぶら)川の河谷平野を占め,中心集落は中山道脇往還の宿場町,市場町として発達。上信電鉄,上信越自動車道が通じる。養蚕が盛んで,シイタケも多産。上野(こうずけ)三碑の一つ多胡碑がある。2009年6月高崎市へ編入。58.35km2。2万4987人(2005)。
