Cat and Mouse Act

...Starting with Christabel's arrest in 1905 for asking a question at the Liberal Party conference, the suffragettes used violent tactics to demand women's suffrage, such as tying themselves to the iron fence of the Prime Minister's house, throwing stones, setting fires, smashing windows, destroying artworks, and in 1913, a woman named Emily Wilding Davison committed suicide by jumping over King George V's horse during the Derby race. When they were arrested, they went on hunger strikes, and the government responded by forcibly feeding them and enacting the so-called "Cat and Mouse Act," which released them when their health deteriorated and rearrested them when they recovered.
