Gulf Stream

Gulf Stream
The Gulf Stream, also known as the Gulf of Mexico, is an ocean current that flows almost northeastward along the western edge of the North Atlantic Ocean. In the narrowest sense, it begins on the east coast of the United States, where the Florida Current leaves the North American coast off the coast of North Carolina, off the coast of Cape Hatteras, and extends to the area off the coast of Newfoundland where it transitions into the North Atlantic Current. In the broadest sense, it includes the Florida Current that flows north from the Gulf of Mexico through the Straits of Florida along the east coast of the United States, the Antilles Current that flows north from the North Equatorial Current east of the Antilles Islands and joins the Florida Current, and the North Atlantic Current, but in this case it is often called the Gulf Stream system. It is a powerful ocean current comparable to the Kuroshio Current in the Pacific Ocean, with a narrow zone of strong currents of 4 to 5 knots, and an estimated flow rate of 80 million tons per second. It is a warm current that originates from the North and South Equatorial Currents and receives hot, saline water from the Central North Atlantic Water (Sargasso Sea), transporting enormous amounts of heat and water from as far west as Britain to the Arctic Ocean, playing a major role in warming Europe's climate.
