A full-length novel by Sata Ineko. It was serialized in the January to May issues of Fujin Koron in 1936 (Showa 11). The final part, titled "Late Summer," appeared in the August 1968 issue of Chuokoron. It was published by Chuokoron-Shinsha in the same year. The work is based on the author's experiences around 1935, when the decline of the left-wing movement became evident. The protagonist is a writer striving for true independence, but is unable to resist the outdated, existing attitudes of those around her as a wife and mother, and is embroiled in a bitter conflict with her husband, a critic of proletarian literature as well. In particular, after her husband's affair with another woman is revealed, her anguish deepens as she is shaken by her own feelings for a woman, as is vividly depicted.
