The capital of the eponymous province in central Poland. Population 123,100 (1995). Located 140 km west-northwest of Warsaw, it developed on the left bank of the Vistula River. Located in the center of the fertile Kujawy Plain, it is a distribution center for agricultural products from the intensively agricultural region. There are many historical buildings reminiscent of the prosperity of the 14th century. In terms of industry, it has food processing, forestry processing, and construction materials industries that utilize local resources, as well as electrical machinery and brewing.
