Ibodai - Ibodai

Japanese: イボダイ - いぼだい
Ibodai - Ibodai

A marine fish belonging to the family Botrytis, order Perciformes. In the Tokyo area and Shizuura, Shizuoka Prefecture, it is called ebodai, a corrupted form. It is a bottom-dwelling fish found in various parts of Japan south of Hokkaido, the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, and the East China Sea. It reaches a total length of 30 cm, has an oval body with marked laterality, and a rounded snout tip. There are a dozen or so shallow grooves running up and down from the center of the side of the body. The scales are round and very easy to peel off. The surface of the body secretes a large amount of mucus, making it slippery. The body is pale gray-blue with a silvery-white sheen, and has an indistinct black-brown spot above the gill slit. This species rises to the surface at night and settles on the bottom during the day. They also migrate seasonally; in the southern Pacific coast they migrate to relatively shallow waters in summer, but move offshore to the open sea from autumn to winter. The spawning season is from June to August in western Japan, and from April to June in the East China Sea. Their flesh is white, tender and high in fat, and is particularly delicious in summer, where it can be grilled with salt, stewed or pickled in miso. A closely related species, the Japanese seabass P. shojimai, is known to live in the waters off Japan.
