Duan Siping

Date of birth and death unknown. Founder of the Dali Kingdom, established in the Yunnan region of China (reigned 937-944). There is no record of his parents, but he is said to have been from Dali County on the west bank of the Erhai Sea, and to have been the sixth-generation descendant of Duan Jian Wei, the Qingping official and military general of Ge Luofeng, the fifth king of Nanzhao Kingdom, the predecessor of Dali Kingdom. The Duan clan was of Bai barbarian (present-day Bai people) descent, based in Dali County, and was one of the most powerful tribes in the Dali Basin. They were also appointed as senior officials in Nanzhao Kingdom for generations, so Duan Siping was probably a descendant of Duan. At the end of the Nanzhao Kingdom, the powerful Zheng, Zhao, and Yang families successively rose to power and seized the throne, but the Tonghai Jiedushi Duan Siping overthrew the Yang family's Dayining Kingdom and ascended to the throne, founding the Dali Kingdom. He established his capital in what is now Dali Shizhi, consolidated the foundation of the kingdom, and practiced Buddhism.

生没年不詳。中国の雲南地方に成立した大理(だいり)国の始祖（在位937～944）。父母の所伝はなく不明であるが、洱海(じかい)の西岸大理県地方の出身らしく、大理国の前身である南詔(なんしょう)国第5代王閣羅鳳(かくらほう)の清平(せいへい)官大軍将段倹魏(だんけんぎ)の6世孫と伝えられる。段氏は白蛮（現在の白(ペー)族）系で大理県地方を本拠地とし、大理盆地の諸部族中の有力部族であったらしく、南詔国でも世々重臣に任ぜられているから、段思平はおそらくこの子孫に相違ない。南詔国の末期には、権臣の鄭(てい)氏、趙(ちょう)氏、楊(よう)氏が相次いで台頭して王位を奪ったが、通海節度使段思平が楊氏の大義寧(だいぎねい)国を倒して即位し、大理国を開いた。都をいまの大理市治に置き、王国の基礎を固め、仏教を信仰した。
