O'Sullivan, JL - O'Sullivan

...A typical example of American expansionism, translated as "manifest destiny" or "destiny of expansion." This term was used by New York City journalist John L. O'Sullivan (1813-95) in his essay entitled "Annexation," published in the July 1845 issue of the Democratic Review. O'Sullivan wrote, "The greatness of our manifest destiny to expand upon this continent given to us by God for the advancement of the freedom of our subjects, whose numbers increase year by year..."
